Please take a moment and watch this video about Belly Breathing. Focusing on breathing can slow our heart rate, lower blood pressure, and sharpen our focus. It can lessen anxiety by overriding our ‘fight, flight, or freeze’ response. Teaching children to focus on breathing can help them become less ‘reactive’ and more reflective in recognizing when they feel anxious or stressed. The more children practice controlling their breathing, the more their brain develops the habit of responding to anxiety by focusing on breathing. We are learning to belly breathe in class, and you can practice at home as well!
